Dan Abrams, the founder of Mediaite and the Abrams Media Network, and Jared Kushner, the owner of the New York Observer, have been in talks that have included the discussion of a partnership between Mediaite and the Observer, according to sources familiar with both companies.
Abrams told Adweek that he has been talking to a number of potential investors about raising money for the Abrams Media Network, including Thrive Capital, the venture capital firm owned by Kushner’s brother, Joshua. Those talks led to a conversation between Abrams and Jared Kushner, who bought the Observer in 2006.
“For the past couple of months I have been talking to a number of prospective investors and possible strategic partners,” Abrams said in an email. “I have spoken to Josh Kushner's firm Thrive and then to Jared Kushner about possible investment in my sites.”
But sources say those talks have included discussion of a plan that would see the two companies each having a 50 percent share in ownership of the Observer, with Abrams taking control of day-to-day editorial operations at the paper. However, that specific deal seems unlikely to happen.
